Saint Lucia

Christmas time, Bethlehem Lutheran Church celebrates the Swedish festival of Saint Lucia, a festival of lights. Our high school youth serve coffee, Swedish tea rings and cookies in the fellowship hall, adorned with Swedish décor and glowing candles. A teenage girl dressed in a white gown, red sash and crown of lingonberry twigs and blazing candles serves the coffee.

According to Swedish tradition, on December 13, Lucia “ Queen of Lights” in the early morning hours carried a torch and traveled from farm to farm bringing baked goods, returning home before dawn.
